5 Everyday Nutrition Habits for Women in Winchester | Advice from a Hampshire Nutritionist
If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a women’s health nutritionist, it’s that the basics matter far more than the wellness trends we all get sucked into on social media. Most of the women I see feel the same: tired, bloated, gaining weight, hormonally “off”, or just not themselves and very often, a few simple daily habits make a huge difference.
Here are the five I encourage almost every woman to start with.
1. Prioritise Protein
Most women simply aren’t eating enough. Protein keeps blood sugar stable, reduces cravings and supports healthy hormones. Think: eggs, poultry, tofu, beans, lentils, hemp seeds, nuts and Greek yoghurt. Aim for at least a palm-sized portion at every meal.
If you’re working on improving body composition, the latest research suggests women need a minimum of 1.2-1.6g of protein per kg of body weight… (I’ll let you figure this one out!)
2. Balance Blood Sugar
If you struggle with mid-afternoon crashes, irritability or cravings, this tip is for you. My advice is always to pair carbohydrates with protein, fibre and healthy fats. For example:
- Oats + nut butter/seeds + berries
- Rice + chicken/tofu + veg
- Fruit + handful of nuts/olives
3. Support Your Gut
Your gut influences just about everything, for example: energy, hormones, immunity and mood. Almost everyone benefits from including a variety of: fermented foods, veggies, beans/lentils, nuts/seeds and whole grains in their daily diet.
A diverse plate = a happier gut.
4. Protect Your Stress + Sleep
High stress and poor sleep = hormonal imbalance. If you are struggling in this area, don’t overcomplicate things. Start with:
- A consistent bedtime
- Less screen time at night
- Morning light
- Magnesium-rich dinners
- A 10-minute walk after meals
5. Eat Seasonally
Seasonal eating naturally increases nutrient variety. It’s fresher, often cheaper, and great for both energy and gut health.
If you shop locally in Winchester, seasonal fibre-rich produce is everywhere. Some of my favourite shops/markets include:
- Farmers Market in Winchester High Street
- Cobbs Farm Shop
- Hampshire Pantry
- Westlands Farm Shop
